This textbook is designed to develop the listening skills needed for academic study at university, particularly the ability to understand lectures and oral presentations.

In addition to basic listening comprehension, it provides practice in identifying the overall structure of a talk and in writing summaries. Each lesson features engaging topics that international students will enjoy listening to, ranging from aspects of Japanese culture and history, such as Mount Fuji, Hidden Christians, gorilla diets, the science of failure, the Tsugaru shamisen, and hot springs in Tokyo, to subjects that serve as an introduction to the natural sciences.

Some lessons include activities in which learners listen while referring to charts, diagrams, or other materials. For these lessons, audio-accompanied videos can also be downloaded and used for listening practice.
