This textbook is designed to develop the ability to listen to lectures and oral presentations—skills essential for university and similar settings. The material is structured to allow for step-by-step learning by the student studying how to accurately grasp a speaker’s intended message, through exercises such as getting a general idea of the content, summarizing key points in spoken responses, and writing summaries. With such topics as the Odeko Shinkansen, women-only train cars, kendo, Rakugo, etc., the book is packed with themes related to Japanese society and culture that will be of interest to the overseas student.

The main text is written in kanji with kana readings, and the separate booklet provides the scripts and answer key.

This book is a new edition of Academic Japanese for International Students: Listening Comprehension (Intermediate to Advanced). Unlike the first edition, this new edition does not include a CD. Audio content can be downloaded or streamed via the “Supplementary Materials” section below (currently in preparation). There are no changes to the content, such as lesson themes or practice exercises.
